Gillingham 0 Tranmere Rovers 1

Mark Stimson leaves the dugout at the final whistle

Gillingham dropped into the League 1 relegation zone following an abject home defeat to Tranmere at Priestfield on Tuesday as the pressure mounted on boss Mark Stimson.

Gills’ scoreless run extended to 416 minutes as they lost to a team who had only won one away game this season and scored just seven goals on the road.

A chorus of boos cascaded from around Priestfield after Ian Thomas-Moore slid in at the far post to finish from a yard after a monumental goalmouth scramble on 67 minutes.

After Paul McClaren’s free-kick from the right was not cleared, Craig Curran hit the inside of the post and Gills keeper Alan Julian produced two fine blocks on the line before the ball was finally bundled into the net to send the 104 travelling fans wild.

Within seconds Stimson was the target of some choice chants from the Rainham End before replacing Luke Rooney with Dennis Oli – who had been waiting to enter the field when the goal was scored.

The boos grew to a crescendo less than a minute later when Stimson hauled-off Mark Bentley for Adam Miller.

Tranmere had grown in stature throughout then second half and first-half substitute Gareth Edds had tested Julian twice in three minutes shortly before the hour.

Firstly he drew a smart save from Julian with a turn on the swivel after the Gills failed to cut-out a cross from the left and moments later more defensive hesitancy saw Edds get above Josh Gowling at the far post but his point-blank header was tipped into the air before being scrambled away.

Dennis Oli had a chance to level in the final minute but after chesting down a ball from the right he miscued his attempt over the bar and in the third minute of stoppage time Josh Gowling blazed over from close range after the ball fell to him from Oli.

It summed up the Gills evening that two of their best chances fell to left-back Chris Palmer.

He stung Luke Daniels’ palms with a first-half drive and fired inches wide of the bottom right corner on 72 minutes.

The closest the Gills came was Luke Rooney rattling the bar from the edge of the box after Andy Barcham had turned Rovers right-back Shaleum Logan inside-out down the left and fizzed a low ball across the face of goal.

Gills: Julian, Fuller, Gowling, Dennehy, Palmer, Bentley (Miller 70mins), Weston (Walker 83mins), Jackman, Barcham, Rooney (Oli 67mins), Jackson. Subs not used: Royce, Maher, Wynter, Payne.

    some fans are too nice

FIRSTLY IT IS NEVER NICE TO GIVE A MANAGER A HARD TIME, BUT I AM ONLY 12 YEARS OLD AND EVEN I GET SICK OF THE RECENT DEFENDING AND MANAGERIAL DECISIONS. HOWEVER ONTO MY POINT IT IS ALSO VERY FRUSTRATING FOR ME AND MANY OTHER SUPPORTERS WHERE YOU SEE PEOPLE WANTING STIMSON TO STAY, DO U ACTUALLY WANT THE CLUB TO PROGRESS? THERE IS NO WAY WITH STIMSON IN CHARGE WE WILL DO ANY BETTER.HOWEVER I DO GET FRUSTRATED WHEN FANS JUST GO THERE TO MOAN !I MAY ALSO BE UNFAIR BUT I ACTUALLY THINK MOST PEOPLE THINK THE SAME, I EVEN COME HOME FROM SCHOOL CRYING THAT HE HAS NOT BEEN SACKED AND TO ME IT LOOKS LIKE HE IS GOING TO STAY. STIMSON IS ONLY KEEPING HIS JOB BECAUSE WE WON AT WEMBLEY, AND SCALLY HASNT GOT THE BOTTLE TO SACK HIM.HOWEVER THERE IS NO WAY I WILL NOT GO TO HOME MATCHES BECAUSE I CARE ABOUT THE CLUB NOT STIMSON! UP THE GILLS AND OFF YOU GO STIMMO!

    The Situation

I was not at the match last night so i cannot comment on the performance, but i can comment on the situation we are in. Firstly i have been supporting the club for 28 years and this has to be the worst team that i have witnessed. I will not name names but some of the players who wear the shirt just do not deserve a chance of league football on their performances this season. These players are bringing down the "better" ones to their level, hence the position we are in. Stimson has no tactical know-how and this is proved by our defensive record. How can a team have the best defence at home, yet the worst away?????? It has to be tactics as they are the same players that play wherever the venue. We were mid-table in this division in November 2007 when Stimson took over and we have taken a mighty backwards step since he has been at the helm. We did achive promotion last season granted, but it was a very very below avwerage division at best and we only scraped through in the play-offs. I look back at the last time we were in League 2 and think that the team the Tony Pulis produced then would have thumped the division last season due to the low standard. We are now struggling at home and haven't scored for 4 and a half games.....a similar run to what we had in 2007/08 after Christmas and we all know we suffered the dreaded R word that season. It's time that the management team held up its hands and admitted defeat due to bad results, dreadful tactics, poor man management and awful treatment of senior pros who had vast experience either with the club or with others. Finally, supporters will only boo or curse if individuals give them good reason to. The team totally under performing and certain players abusive our great club will only lead to them being abused back and rightly so.

    Stimson to stay

To all those fans calling for Stimson to go, I'm guessing you're the same fans that wanted Scally out over the last few years. Why can you not just get behind the team 100% and forget about giving the chairman and manager stick. At the end of the day, the players are the ones who have to perform on the day - we just need to get behind them 100% and we can get back to achieving results like the 5-0 we produced against Swindon. Please note the team that played Swindon in that game; Julian, Fuller, Gowling, Richards, Nutter, Bentley, Miller, Payne, Weston, Barcham, Jackson. Not far off of the team that played last night! Save your vocal chanting for getting behind the team, they need all the support we can give!!

I was at the match last night and also away at Brentford on Saturday. What I find so disheartening is the fact that we have got some good players who are being let down by a not very good manager. Players come in to the team play for a couple of matches then disappear only to come in again out of the blue. I don't want to rant on about sacking the manager, but those people who say if you don't like it clear off, should take a cold look at what is happening to the players. Be honest would you have sent Miller on knowing how the crowd would react, it was not a sensible choice and shows Stimston's limited ability

    Absolute tosh

Where does one begin, total lack of leadership on and off the pitch. Going into the match with one striker(small one at that) who is no kind of form and then playing high balls up to him.The team could'nt string 2 passes together , no passio no fight it looked as though they have already accepted their destiny to be relegated . I was tottally disgusted by this non-performance.
Why was Bentley (the only player who can head the ball) taken off?And why keep playing Jackson when he is clearly off form and does not look interested. Somebody has to kick a few butts and it has to come from the top.

    Just making it worse

I totally agree with Kevin. What is the point in supporting a team if you're just going to boo the players and call for the manager's head? The moral is low enough without making it worse! Ok, we are rubbish at the moment and probably this is down to Stimmo but seriously, if he goes, who are we going to get? What do these fans expect? Stuart Pierce or somebody? Be real! As for Adam Miller. I can assure you, I don't have any time for him now but to boo your own player? For goodness sake, he was wearing the shirt, therefore we should support him for the duration. Whatever you all think of Stimmo or the individual players, keep your comments to the pub or at home. When we are at Priestfield, we HAVE TO SUPPORT OUR TEAM, whatever our feelings!!

    amazed he hasn't gone yet....

i am afraid kevin's comments above are wide of the mark. it is irrelevant how much we pay for our season tickets, you pay your money, you are entitled to your opinion.

miller has openly suggested he hates the club etc, last week when he was warming up in front of the medway stand a couple of fans who must of been in their 60's yelled a very jocular "even the eastenders didn't want you" - if miller is going to publicly open his mouth then he HAS to accept the odd comment, especially ones that are clean and done in a fun way. These are supposed to be pros, who are only too keen to lap up praise, but must also accept criticism. going back to season ticket prices, i suggest kevin chekcs prices out at other league 1 clubs, we are one of the most expensive and were about the only club to put prices up this season, during a recession!

as for stimson, he goes on the radio and publically criticises the fans, and has done so since he arrived, so he doesn't help his own cause. when he arrived we went out of the fa cap to a league 2 side, he couldn't get 90% of the existing team to play for him so he replaced them, granted there were a few wasters there, but not all of them. we then scraped relegation in a very very poor league two. back in league 1, HIS players are still struggling, despite being signed when we were in league 1 last time as being good enough for league 1, and above. he quite clearly cannot see this. if he seriously thought adam miller was going to change the game this only proves it. yet again he has been unable to get the best out of his players and has bought in new ones, after going out of the fa cup to a league 2 side.

if you put most of his playes on the transfer list it would be non league and a few league 2 sides who come in for them at best. says it all really. the ones who car good enough for this level, jackson, barcham, weston, royce - have all performed below their own best, clearly he has lost the dressing room.

sadly he won't resign as he has an ego bigger then the titanic, and probably wants a nice pay off too.

please please mr scallly, do us all a favour and release this joker, he is simply not up to it. we are doomed if he stays, at least with someone else at the helm, we may stand a fighting chance.

as for the game last night, well done to the 100 or so tranmere fans for making a very long trip on a cold winter's night and good luck for the rest of the season.

as the game went on it looked more and more like tranmere scoring than us, the occasion and what is at stake was clearly too much for some of our younger players like rooney, julian for his shot-stopping simply doesn't have the rest of the "package" - it took him untilt he 84th minute to throw the ball to one of our players - 90% of his goal kicks were won by them. jackman ran his socks off but clearly needs a few matches to regain his sharpness, as would any player who has been out for so long. bentley has surely earned a new contract, if we can dish out 2 and 3 years deal to the likes of maher and mccammon.

put simply, when stimson arrived we we struggling in league one, but would have most likely stayed up with our home form and the experience we had, he was given the benefit of the doubt after relegation last time. this time, they are all his players and we are worse at this level, he has had his chance and has shown, for the time being, he cannot cut it at this level.

I dont know about the rest of you but playing the long ball to a single small striker was a stroke of genius from the manager, nearly every part of the pitch we were out muscled if your going to play the long ball rubbish you may need to get some bigger players.
Jackman was totally useless and man of the match Gowling, I cant remeber a decent pass more went astray than found there intended target.
Only one forward that really makes a statement about your intentions Stimpson. Do us all a favour and go!

    what do you expect?

I was at the game tonight, and to say I was disgusted with the calls for Mark Stimson to go,and the disgraceful booing of Adam Miller,is an understatement. The pathetic minority who do this have no idea of how a club at this level survives.Let me enlighten them.Firstly, the majority will have paid £300 to £400 pounds for a season ticket. This will NOT entitle you to to have either a premiership level manager or players of that ability. What it will get you is a manager that is totally reliant on limited finance being availble, and as a consequence,he will also be limited as to the quality of player he can pursue. If the boo boys at the club cannot get their heads around this, then maybe they should consider spending more money at a club where they might reasonably expect better players, and therefore the possibility of greater success.Failing this,of course, they could always get behind their team more, in the hope that the vocal support the players, and management, receive may spur them on.

    Gills v Tranmere

What a shambles,a totally inept performance from a totally disillusioned team who have no idea what to do or how to do it.
Positioning was abysmal, defending was poor, first touch was non existant, passing was poor, throw ins usually went to opposition.
Finally shooting was inaccurate and lame all in all a really pathetic show from a bunch of 'pros'.
I would also ask Stimson why he is playing Miller who has already stated he does not want to play again for Gillingham and showed that tonight - also Rooney seemed to have no idea or little idea of what his job was tonight - his worst game for the Gills so far.
We are now in the mire and i for one do not see us getting out of it
and on this performance we don't deserve to.
Tranmere deserved the points tonight because they were more determined and made non stop effort
a pity we did not show the same commitment.
Come on Stimson throw in the towel now and let someone else try to sort out the mess you have created
it is uphill all the way now until May.
The supporters of this club deserve
a better effort on and off of the pitch by the team but the team deserve to be led by someone who has his heart in the club and not be led by someone who says he is not a Gillingham supporter - not the greatest comment to make by the manager.
    Up the Gills!!!!!!
