Under-fire Gillingham manager Mark Stimson says he won't quit

Gillingham boss Mark Stimson has vowed not to quit but admitted that every manager is "hired to be fired".

Stimson, pictured, described himself as "devastated and hurting" after the 4-0 defeat at Brentford on Saturday, but questioned whether some of his players felt it as badly.

Stimson said: "I think a few of them let themselves down, the club and me. I take responsibility for the performance and I know I have let the chairman down and the supporters down.

"I won’t walk away, I was brought up in the East End, and you face it eye to eye and get on with it."

The Gills boss acknowledged the unhappy Gills fans afterwards at Griffin Park, many of whom were calling for his head.

He added: "It’s not a nice feeling, and something you don’t want to hear as a manager. It happens, and I probably wasn’t the only one around the country who had that thrown at him on Saturday.

"It’s part and parcel of the job, and I have always said I’ll do my best until the chairman tells me any different. He is the one that will make that decision, he employed me, and every manager is hired to be fired."

Stimson ran out of ideas Saturday - yet another lack lust performance after hitting the post inside 5 minutes we were second best to everything - the whole back 4 were poor - Mark bentley stood out and was subbed ?? - Stimson has clearly run out of ideas now and we are offering deals to players no one else wants - everyone from the medway towns knows mark mccammon from charlton and millwall and he did not score for them and yet we give him a 3 year deal.

i think GILLINGHAM are now in trouble after being drawn into the relegation zone, which is possibly down to poor managerment skills, and motivation on and off the playing field.i also think some of the players have not helped by not giving 100% this season,it has shown at many home and specially away games which we have not one won yet ! I think tomorrows night game with Tranmere will be the turning point for the FANS WHO will call for him to go(some have already shown this ).SO now a lot of fans had enough,he done a lot of talking without the results.if we lose tomorrow night i believe he should leave.

  • Stimson should go now.

The players are not doing the business on the pitch, they cant defend, its all very nice putting a couple of passes together ,but they isn't enough. We need a solid back four,Stimson just keeps picking his favourite players ,this is the team he should pick for tomorrows game, royce, wynter, fuller, gowling, nutter, miller, weston, oli, barcham, walker ,jackson.Lets see if he does!Up the Gills.

The worrying aspect of stimmo's comments about his players not giving their all is that he cannot see that they ARE giving their all but their all just isn' good enough- and that, i suggest his HIS fault because his managerial skills are now so weak that he cannot SEE that they are not good enough. His constant "qualifying" of the buck stops with me" by then blaming some of the players is getting rather irritating suggesting to the fans that he is "not a gillingham supporter" but will do the best he can - was a MEGA blunder

I feel i must put something into the pot after going to Brentford with all of the other 'hopefuls' from Kent and watching the most inept defending i have yet seen. This was my first away day viewing of 'my' team although i am a season ticket holder and do not miss any home games. It seems the tactics adopted away are all wrong - when teams visit us they get at us and make it difficult for us to play - at Brentford we made it easy for them continually back passing, backing off of tackles when defending,no back up to assist each other in defending, having trouble in getting control - poor first and second touch and finally no power in our efforts on goal. The two Myles Weston goals were rockets which Julian didn't even see until they were in the net - Simeon please note. Walker played well and was subbed - he was causing problems all of the time he was on the pitch when he went and 'Big Mac' came on we effectively stopped causing any problems to Brentford. Stimson needs our support but he has got to start motivating the team and making more constructive subs and more positive team tactics. The two full backs had no idea of how to stop the wingers or Macdonald or John Akinde - they were not up to the job. Also why did we not try for Akinde he was a handful all afternoon and will score a lot of goals for The Bees. Come on let's have 100 percent effort tonight and no excuses - we are now in desperate need of the points and we need to start to get them tonight. So fingers out, sleeves rolled up and let's get at them - Up the Gills.
