Inside View with Charlton defender Chris Solly

Everyone knows that we need to start
turning some of our recent draws into wins.
We managed a good point at Swindon
Town last weekend – any point you gain thanks to a last-minute
equaliser has to be considered a good point!
But we need wins if we are going to
close the gap on Norwich City and Leeds United and gain an
automatic promotion spot, as we know we are capable of doing.
It’s my first full season with the
first-team squad and being involved in a promotion race is
exciting.
I know how important it is for the
club to go up, though, and I will be doing all I can to make that
happen.
I’ve played my part in the past couple
of matches, even though it was in a slightly unusual position at
left-back. I started away at Walsall and came on late on against
Swindon.
In fact, I didn’t find out until the
morning of the game that I would play against Walsall.
The manager just told me to play my
normal game and do what I do and he was pleased with me
afterwards.
I feel comfortable playing at
left-back because I’ve played there a fair bit for the reserves and
the youth team, so it’s not a problem for me.
It was also at left-back that I made
my debut, when I came on after Darren Ward’s injury against Norwich
in the final game of last season, so in some ways I’m a regular
there!
It’s been a difficult season for me so
far, due to my knee injury. I got injured in training the day
before the away game at Gillingham in October and unfortunately for
me (and Frazer), Frazer Richardson was injured in the match the
following day.
Normally, I would be ready to step up
into the team and perhaps get a bit of a run but I was also
sidelined, so the manager had to bring in Elliot Omozusi.
Elliot’s gone back to Fulham after the
end of his loan now and Frazer and I played on opposite flanks
against Walsall, so there is room for us in the same team.
I’ve had no problems with my knee
since recovering and fitness-wise I feel good because I did a lot
of fitness work in getting back from the injury.
We’ve got Bristol Rovers next on
Monday night. It’s live on Sky but we need to forget that everyone
will be watching and concentrate on getting a win.
Personally, I need to show why I
should be starting every week.
My contract’s up at the end of the
season so hopefully I’ll get a new deal and I can celebrate
promotion at the same time.
