Thirty new jobs to be created at Travelodge in Maidstone

Travelodge, Maidstoneby Trevor Sturgess

Maidstone's newest hotel aims to take on long-term unemployed to fill many of its 30 new jobs.

Travelodge, a 113-bedroom budget hotel that opens in January in St Peter’s Street, Maidstone, has launched a recruitment drive with Job Centre Plus.

The business is hiring entry level staff through a scheme that focuses on getting the local long-term unemployed back in to work.

The jobs on offer for “enthusiastic, motivated and committed” individuals include receptionists, night receptionists, guest room cleaners, head of housekeeping and linen porters.

Wesley Brown, Travelodge district manager for Kent, said: “I am looking forward to bringing the best team together, to help make Maidstone Central Travelodge a great success.

"At Travelodge, we believe in developing our people and offer an excellent training and career advancement programme. The company’s ethos is to ensure staff find their work enjoyable and fulfilling.”

Tonbridge Jobcentre Plus local account manager Jonathan Smoker said: “We are very pleased to be working with Travelodge to fulfil their recruitment needs and help our customers back into work.”

The Maidstone Central Travelodge has provoked controversy, with some residents complaining about the design in such a prominent riverside location.

It is one of more than 390 hotels operated by the chain in the UK, Ireland and Spain. It employs 5,000 people and is owned by Dubai International Capital, a private equity firm that bought it from Permira in 2006 for £675 million.

My husband has been trying to apply for a job at travelodge Maidstone since we first saw the building going up. All we could get was the number for booking a room. He's even been to site to ask but there was no one to help him. Did anyone get a job here or was it all in house in the end? Its so frustrating.

I have been trying to apply for a part time room cleaner position but without any joy. Like Samantha I have visited the site but was unable to find anyone to help me. The jobcentre dosn't have any application forms so would you please respond. I have access to a computer and would be more than happy to complete a form on line. My telephone number is 01622 861061 and I would be happy to talk about any suitable vacancies you may have.

“enthusiastic, motivated and committed”... plus long-term unemployed don't go together! I've interviewed some of these long-term employed and all they want is your signature so they can continue drawing benefits!

I have been unemployed since the end of october, i am doing computer courses, CV improvement course, have walked everywhere handing out CV's and completed so many online applications i have to keep file of them to remember all the posts. I dont see myself as un-employable, far from it, but days run into months, this could make me 'long term un-employed' but its not through lack of effort ! Please dont presume no one wants to work !

I've been out of work for about a year now. This has nothing to do with benefits as I'm not claiming. I think it's great if employers are looking for those who have been out of work for a long time. It's easy to get discouraged after you've been turned down for job after job. Some long-term unemployed may have no desire for a job but don't label everyone with it.

  • Long Term Unemployed for Leslie

For Leslie, What a narrow minded employer you must be with a very negative view of long term unemployed. It happens to anyone including people with a previous good career history. My advice to those of you who are still unemployed and looking for work: Contact Travelodge Recruitment at Head office, Use back to work interview scheme if you are out of work for more than four weeks and have lived at your address for more than six months. The job has to be more than 8 miles from where you live but so long as you tell the jobcentre in advance you can get your mileage or fare back. Ask for help if you are more than 6 months out of work, go on training schemes which are free to strengthen your skills. Apply to various agencies, attend various job recruitment fairs. Do voluntary work to get you back in to the habit of work. Good luck, it is a very difficult job market. Finally, take a part time job as a start to go back to work, you may still be eligible for tax credits, and housing or council tax benefit so it does pay to work Hope this helps !
